For more than three quarters, Brentwood was ice cold.

Nothing would fall. But then something clicked.

The Bruins went on a 12-1 run in the fourth quarter as they rallied to a 51-42 win at Summit on Friday night.

“Obviously, we knocked some shots down, but more importantly we got some defensive stops,” Bruins coach Greg Shirley said. “I’ve got a determined group of young men that really have been through the battles and they hung tough, and made free throws down the stretch.”

Brentwood (18-5, 10-2 District 11-AAA) hit only 26 percent of its shots from the floor in the first three quarters on 9 of 35 shooting.

The Bruins didn’t take their first lead until Jack Thurman buried a 3-pointer to give Brentwood a 36-34 advantage with 5:31 left.

“We had to grind it out, so that’s what we did,” Thurman said. “It was just one of those game. You’ve got to keep shooting to get out of slumps and that’s what we did.”

Thurman led the Bruins with 17 points and Harry Lackey, a 6-foot-6 guard, added 13.

Brentwood remains second in the district behind Franklin (7-4, 8-1). Summit (6-10, 4-7) is seventh in the nine-team district.

The Spartans start three freshmen and two sophomores.

“We have 11 underclassmen on our 15-man roster,” Summit coach Josh Goodwin said. “I don’t have a record book of everybody else in the district, but I would say except for new schools that only have freshmen and sophomores I feel pretty confident that this is probably the youngest team ever.”

Freshman Tristan Conger led Summit with 17 points, but he was the only Spartan in double figures.

“Brentwood made plays,” Goodwin said. “There’s a ton of room for improvement. We’ve got one loss in district – to them – that was more than one possession with a minute to go. We just either find a way to not get it done or the same things kind of plague us.”

It looked like a baseball score after the first quarter with Summit holding a 4-3 lead.
