A guiding light for Brentwood Middle athletics for the better part of three decades has passed away.

Mickey Johnson, who coached and taught at Brentwood Middle School for 31 years, died over the weekend at the age of 68.

He played college basketball at Trevecca College after graduating from Bethseda High School and joined the BMS family in 1988 to begin his coaching and teaching career.

“We are completely heartbroken over the loss of Coach Johnson,” the school shared on Twitter over the weekend in regard to the news.

“He has been beloved in the BMS Community for the past 31 years as a PE Teacher, Coach, and Mentor. Coach Johnson and his legacy will not be forgotten and will continue to live on at BMS for many years to come.”

Brentwood Middle invited all in its community to wear Tennessee and Minnesota Vikings colors to school Monday to commemorate Johnson’s two favorite sports teams.

“He was always a joy to be around and loved decades worth of kids,” Brentwood High School’s athletic department shared on Twitter Saturday. “A truly great person.”

Visitation will be at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home on Monday, April 1, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., and on Tuesday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The service is set for 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at Williamson Memorial as well.

The family has asked memorial donations be made to Williamson Medical Center Children’s Hospital.

More can be found on Johnson’s obituary.
