The Brentwood Bruins lost a heartbreaking overtime game in the Class AAA state championship semifinals Thursday night for the second year in a row.

This time it was the Bearden Bulldogs who upset the Bruins 1-0 in overtime at Siegel Soccer Complex in the matchup of traditional Tennessee soccer powerhouses.

Both teams seemed evenly-matched. They all played great individual defense and had outstanding goalkeeping.

Brentwood had 11 shots on goal, while Bearden had 10. Senior goalkeeper Jake Severino had three electrifying saves at crucial times in the game.

After 80 minutes of grueling action the game was scoreless and headed to overtime. All year long Brentwood has found a way to stop opponents from winning, and found a magical way towards victory.

And Thursday’s game had so many moments where it seemed the Bruins would once again use that magic potion to conjure up another win. But it was not meant to be.

It was Bearden who found a way to score this time, as Collin Lewis got in a goal off a free kick. The moment was sparked by a Brentwood handball penalty with 3:48 remaining in the second overtime period.

The Bruins fought vigorously to tie the game but were unable to as the final horn sounded.

Brentwood coach Mike Purcell reflected on the season-ending game.

“It was a great game,” he said. “We couldn’t finish, but we had multiple chances. We had a lot of corner kicks we didn’t put away. It was a pretty even game, but I felt like we had some better chances than they did. I know Blake Chalfant had that one in the first overtime.

“Man, I saw that flash, and I was pretty sure it was going in. But it didn’t. We just had a lot of opportunities we couldn’t capitalize on. We had our first loss, last loss and only loss in the same day. The same thing happened last year. We lost in penalty kicks last year in the state semifinals.

“The guys did everything we asked, and they left it on the field. Sometimes it just doesn’t break your way.”
