July unemployment

The statewide unemployment rate for the month of August will be released on September 17.

The number of Williamson County residents currently on unemployment has dipped below 4,000 for the first time since late March, according to new data released Thursday by the Tennessee Department of Labor.

Last week, between Aug. 30 and Sept. 5, a total of 3,771 Williamson residents received unemployment benefits, with the previous week showing 4,069 Williamson residents on unemployment.

This new milestone in unemployment for the county shows the lowest numbers since the week beginning on March 29, in which there were 3,164 Williamson residents on unemployment.

That figure increased significantly the subsequent week to 5,790 before the county reached its peak of unemployment in late April, with 8,817 reported continued unemployment claims.

The number of new claims filed last week also saw a moderate decrease, with 173 Williamson residents filing for unemployment for their first time. The previous week saw 198 first-time claims, whereas pre-pandemic levels of new claims in the county were around 45, using the week ending on March 14 as an example.

The state as a whole saw a similar trend, with last week seeing 176,388 continued unemployment claims - the lowest number since late March, with the week beginning on March 28 reporting 112,438 continued claims.
