Brentwood High’s volleyball squad ran through a 27-team field to win the 30th annual Juanita Boddie tournament this past weekend in Birmingham, Ala.

The Lady Bruins (9-1) defeated Alabama’s Mountain Brook (7-1) in the final 2-0 (25-20, 25-13).

BHS, which started the season 3-0 against three Murfreesboro teams, dropped only two games the whole tourney and that was in its only loss.

The Lady Bruins open District 11-AAA competition on Tuesday at home against Centennial at 6 p.m. Two-time defending AAA state champ Ravenwood hosts Hillsboro and Franklin visits Independence, also both at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

In the final against Mountain Brook, Brentwood’s Sarah Tuttle had 10 kills and eight digs, while Samantha Cotton made seven kills and had a block.

Piper Cleveland led the defense with 19 digs, Alexis Spahn served three aces and setter Hunter Thompson recorded 18 assists.

Here are the results from the Lady Bruins’ other matches in the tournament, which drew teams from Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee:

Brentwood 2, Guntersville (Ala.) 0: Tuttle and Cotton had five kills each, followed by Ashley West with four, in the 25-14, 25-19 victory.

Spahn aced five serves, and Thompson made 13 assists and a block.  Tuttle and Cleveland combined for 16 digs.

McGill-Toolen (Ala.) 2, Brentwood 0: BHS suffered its first loss of the season and only one of the tournament to McGill-Toolen, 25-20, 25-16.

Tuttle and Cotton had nine kills together, and Cleveland led the team in digs with nine. Thompson, Tuttle and Cotton each scored an ace, while Thompson set up 13 assists.

Brentwood 2, Wenonah (Ala.) 0: Ashley West’s eight kills and Cotton’s six led the Lady Bruins to a 25-10, 25-14 win. Spahn had three aces and eight digs, Cleveland came up with 10 digs and Thompson had 19 assists.

The Lady Bruins won the 30th annual tourney in a field of 27 from three states.

Brentwood 2, Austin (Ala.) 0: Cotton and Tuttle combined for 12 kills, and Tuttle’s five aces helped lead the 25-11, 25-6 victory.

Cleveland and Spahn dug out seven balls together on defense, and Thompson set up teammates with 18 assists.

Brentwood 2, Huntsville (Ala.) 0: Tuttle had 11 kills and two aces in the 25-20, 25-19 win, and Thompson made 25 assists and aced a pair of serves.

Spahn added five more kills and Cleveland led BHS with six digs. Thompson, Spahn and Tuttle were also strong on defense with four digs apiece.

Brentwood 2, Bayside Academy (Ala.) 0: Kael Massey scored three blocks, while Tuttle and Cotton came up with nine kills between them in the 25-18, 25-23 win.

Aces were served by Tuttle, Cleveland and West, with a whopping 16 digs from Cleveland and 14 assists by Thompson.

Brentwood 2, Harrison (Ga.) 0: Tuttle’s 12 kills were tops for the Lady Bruins, who won 25-18, 25-14 with the help of 20 assists and two aces from Thompson.

Spahn made three more kills, a block and seven digs. Cotton also had three kills, along with two aces. Liz Schwarz led the defense with eight digs, followed by seven from Cleveland.
