Letters of recommendation are now optional in the University of Tennessee Knoxville application process, but all applicants this year are being asked to write a personal essay.

“Seeing a personal essay is a prospective student’s opportunity to tell us who they are beyond what we learn from test scores and transcripts — what’s important to them, what they’ve accomplished, what they’ve overcome, what they want to do with their lives and how UT will be a part of their journey,” said Kari Alldredge, interim associate provost and director of undergraduate admissions, in a press release announcing the essay requirement.. “Test scores and grades are important, but we also consider the broad range of experiences and talents a student will share with our campus community. The personal essay gives us that insight.”

For the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the priority admissions and scholarship deadline is Nov. 1. Incoming freshmen must have their applications filed by this date to be considered for competitive scholarships and the Chancellor’s Honors Program. Once admitted, qualifying students will be invited to complete a scholarship and honors application.
The regular application deadline is Dec. 1. Students meeting this deadline will be considered for institutional scholarships, including the Volunteer Scholarship.
Applicants are encouraged to submit transcripts, their essay and other materials by the Nov. 1 and Dec. 1 deadlines. New test scores can be submitted until Dec. 31 for scholarship consideration.
To apply online, visit http://vip.utk.edu or use the Common Application at http://www.commonapp.org/.
Admitted students will be notified soon after admission if they qualify for funding through the Volunteer Scholarship program. Now in its second year, this program provides UT scholarship monies to students who have at least a 3.8 UT weighted core GPA and a super-cored ACT of at least 28 or SAT score of at least 1250.

This year, UT welcomed more than 4,700 freshmen. The university’s undergraduate enrollment is nearly 21,900.
“We are seeking the very best students from Tennessee and beyond to build our incoming fall 2016 class,” Alldredge said.
