It was a big night for Brentwood Academy as they faced off against their non-conference opponent West Toronto Prep.
With Brentwood Academy on the verge of its 500th all time program win, the stakes were high and the Eagles knew they had to bring their A-game.
They did just that, securing a 40-0 shutout victory at home and notching win 500 in the program’s history books.
“It’s a huge win for this program.” Eagles head coach Cody White said. “Especially since that didn’t start off winning when this began in the 70s.”
This game was all Brentwood Academy once they got rolling with a touchdown from Jordan James late in the first quarter.
This would be the first of four rushing touchdowns on the night for James as he would be the workhorse for the Eagles tonight with 15 carries for 201 yards rushing with an average of 13 yards per carry.
When the Eagles weren’t handing the ball off to James, quarterback Taylor Montiel came through for them when they needed him to. Montiel had a steady night through the air with 127 yards passing with one touchdown and an interception.
If they were any statistics that could give some insight into what this game was like, it would have to be the yards per play and number of punts. Brentwood Academy outgained West Toronto Prep by roughly six yards every play with 8.7 yards per play, while West Toronto Prep only had 2.6 yards per play.
BA would also only be forced to punt the ball twice in the entire game as its offense scored almost every time they came out on the field.
Another big factor in the win tonight for Brentwood Academy was winning the turnover battle. BA recovered three fumbles and had one interception as the Eagles defense dominated West Toronto Prep in every aspect of the game.
This prevented West Toronto Prep from gaining any sort of momentum and managed to keep the shutout possible.
“We’ve been good defensively all year.” White said. “We are going to have get better if we expect to continue winning.”
While the win was important for Brentwood Academy, very few football programs are lucky enough to say that they have won 500 games.
Tonight’s win was not only a statement of how dominant the Eagles have been this season, but it’s a testament to how dominant they have been for quite some time.
They are one of the winningest teams in the state of Tennessee, as they haven’t had a losing season in the last fifteen years.
Brentwood Academy Football needed a few years to become the powerhouse it is today, as the first few seasons under legendary former head coach Carlton Flatt weren’t nearly as successful.
The Eagles won only five game its first three seasons, until its first winning season in 1973. After that, losing has been in the rearview mirror.
This win not only earns the Eagles their 500th win, but it will move them to 5-1 on the season.
The Eagles will prepare for a tough away game next week against Knoxville Catholic, who has consistently produced Division I talent as of late.
