eVic Wharton III

Independence senior Vic Wharton III, a University of Tennessee commit, is this week’s FHP / Newk’s Player of the Week after scoring four straight touchdowns Friday.

Wharton found the end zone receiving, rushing and returning. Also a defensive back on defense, he had 206 all-purpose yards in the 49-14 victory over Marshall County.

Wharton had three catches for 102 yards and 2 TDs, including a 77-yard pass play from senior quarterback Caleb Hollis for the Eagles’ first lead at 14-7.

He then returned a punt for 60 yards a minute later, and caught a 15-yard touchdown ebefore halftime for his third score of the second quarter. Wharton, who also carried the ball twice for 13 yards, ran for another TD midway through the third quarter for a 35-7 IHS advantage.

The speedster, who had a painful injury in track, decided against arthroscopic hip surgery because it would have sidelined him the first several games of football.

He had one kickoff return for 29 yards and two punt returns for 62 yards including the long TD. Last season he also lined up at quarterback quite a bit.

Independence, ranked fifth in last week’s Associated Press Class 6A poll, hosts neighboring Summit in a District 11-AAA opener at 7 p.m. Friday. The game also serves as homecoming for the Eagles.
